Bob Quincy Award The award presented to the Sportsman of the Year is named for Bob Quincy, an avid sportsman who was the five-time winner of the NC Sportswriter of the Year award and who was known for his love of North Carolina sports and for his storytelling ability. He was an active member of the Sportsman's Club for over 20 years. Each year since the 1964 meeting, the Sportsman's Club of Charlotte presents the Bob Quincy award to a regional sports-person of significant accomplishments for that year. The sports-person of the year is named in honor of the late Bob Quincy who was an outstanding sports journalist in Charlotte. In addition to his many award winning writings, Bob Quincy was an ardent supporter of sports in the Charlotte community. It is fitting that this award bears his name. Some of the past Quincy award winners are: Bobby Jones, Cedric Maxwell, and Walter Davis, all-American college and all-pro basketball players; Antawn Jamison, NCAA collegiate player of the year; Arnold Palmer for his outstanding contributions to golf; Lefty Driesell, college basketball coach; Jim Thacker, radio and television broadcaster; Dwight Clark, and Mike Cofer, NFL players; Dr. Tom Scott, college administrator and chairman of the NCAA college basketball committee; Jerry Richardson and Mark Richardson of the Carolina Panthers NFL organization; Bernard Taylor, amateur boxing champion; Humpy Wheeler, NASCAR motor sports; Judy W. Rose, NCAA college athletic administration; and Dom Capers and John Fox, NFL coaches. These, and many others, have been recipients of the Bob Quincy award given annually by the Sportsman's Club of Charlotte at the annual Ladies night function.
